The use of fossil fuels results in global warming and environmental pollution besides depletion of fossil fuels which urges the use of alternative energy and renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is the alternative energy carrier which can be used to run fuel cells wherein electrical energy, thermal energy and water are the by-products. Besides, emission of CO2 can be considerably reduced by alternative methods to capture the same by chemically activated nanocomposites at the place where it is produced. The other environmental issue is the purification of water especially the industrial waste-waters and ground water, which is very significant considering the present water crisis.


The Research group at AENL is involved in state-of-the-art research in hydrogen energy technology and Nanotechnology focusing on synthesis and applications of carbon nanotubes and graphene to Fuel cells, solar cells and Nanofluids. We have developed more than 10 technologies and filed 15 patents.


With reference to Hydrogen energy technology, our group has designed and developed “A fully automated high pressure hydrogen absorption/adsorption facility and Hydrogen storage device with AB2 hydride at IITM. With reference to Nanotechnology, a fully Automated Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) facility for processing of different types of CNTs has been designed and developed. We have developed novel catalysts for the synthesis of different types of Carbon nanotubes in large quantities using CVD technique.

Recent global environmental issues have brought in much focus on Fuel cells Technology and our group has developed novel Pt/MWNC electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction in PEMFC and Pt free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction in PEMFC. Besides, the application of nanomaterials has been performed in developing technologies such as flexible carbon nanotube based field emitter & Portable field emitter chamber,  CNT based nanofluids for coolant applications and Flexible  CNT-Metal Oxide based Supercapacitor stack. Recently, a patent on “Nanomaterials for industrial waste waters treatmenthas been filed and the technology transfer to an industry for the purification of industrial waste waters is being processed.


Besides the different applications of Carbon nanotubes to energy and environment, the applications related to biosensors and biomedical have been initiated by the us. Nanocomposite based Novel, Flexible, Nerve Guide Conduit, Nanomaterials for detection of OP gas and decontamination of OP gas, Spacerless f-CNTs and f-Graphene for Cancer treatment and Magnetic metal nanowire encapsulated CNTs based nanofluids for drug delivery are the some of the technologies developed focusing the biosensing and biomedical aspects of CNTs. A new method of processing of functionalized Graphene sheets has been developed for the first time in AENL laboratory and the energy, environment and biosensors and biomedical applications of graphene have been initiated.  


Our group has conducted many nano-energy related quality improvement programs (QIP) and technology appreciation programs (TAP) at IITM to train faculty members from South India and Industries on the advantage of nanomaterials. We have developed Nano Functional Materials Technology Centre (NFMTC) at IITM with the state-of-art facility with the funding of DST and two industries. He has completed 10 Ph.D. students and 20 Ph.D., M.Tech., and B.Tech. Students are working in our research group.
