There is a fairly large community of researchers in India working
on both experimental and theoretical aspects of what has now come
to be known as
Soft Matter, and on networks that are
relevant to biology. This community comprises chemical engineers,
electrical engineers, biologists, physicists, and applied
mathematicians. There is considerable enthusiasm and motivation
for holding such an inter-disciplinary meeting, based on our
experience with some recent meetings on this theme held elsewhere. We
feel
that it is now both appropriate and timely to continue this
inter-disciplinary trend with a topical conference
with IIT Madras as the venue.
Among the topics of current research interest that we propose to
include in
the conference are
membranes, polymers, liquid crystals,
surfactant systems,
cell biophysics, electrostatic effects in biological systems and soft
matter,
neural networks, ecological networks and traffic models.
The weather in Chennai during February is mostly pleasant, with warm-dry
days and cool nights. The average maximum temperature during this time
of the year usually hovers around 30 degrees celsius and the minimum being around
20 degrees celsius.
